Shaina Zucker from the Daily has been working on a story about Dion Nguyen, who co-owns and runs Modalita Salon on Fry street. I was there for about three hours today shooting photos and gathering audio.
Dion’s good friend and long time client, Jared, was there getting his hair cut with his friend, Sandra, and they were really gracious and let me intrude upon their lives and get some pretty cool photos.

“The town of Paradise is on fire!”
Yesterday I photographed for the Daily’s restaurant review of I Love Sushi on University Drive. I’ve been experimenting with using my SB-800 flash off camera and put it to the test for sushi photographs.

Sushi is so visual and colorful, so it’s a shame the photo in the paper Friday will be black and white. I’m working with Brooke Cowlishaw (a reporter at the Daily) to get an audio slide show of the restaurant up on the web sometime this week.

This video is one of the many violent and disturbing public service announcements that have been airing on Middle Eastern TV stations for over a year. The video is distributed by noterror.info, whose tagline is “Terrorism has no religion.” The site has almost a dozen other ads and they all have really high production values. It’s not clear who is funding them, but some experts weighed in on the issue after the first ad surfaced in October 2006.
The ads are obviously effective, but who exactly are they affecting? In the above article from CTV.ca, Sohail Raza of the Canadian Muslim congress said “We are preaching to the converted, the people who follow the ideology of destruction, who don’t watch television. It’s against their faith.”
So maybe the only people who are moved by these short videos are the people who already agree with the message. Not that that’s a bad thing, but it does seem rather unlikely that a potential kidnapper would be swayed by a commercial with cool cinematography. Isn’t that the presumed intent based on noterror.info?
The folks at Inside Iraq (a blog by Iraqi journalists) are fans of the ads. Their opinions are worth noting, since this stuff is going on in their midst. While this ad seems very Hollywood-esque, these bloggers say it’s an accurate picture of kidnapping in Iraq.

A hacker group calling itself Anonymous has been e-battling with the Church of Scientology as of late. Cnet’s news.com sums up the story pretty well.
Basically, a group of hackers with a distaste for the Church of Scientology managed to get a copy of a video of Tom Cruise promoting the organization, edit it and distribute it online. The COS decided this was copyright infringement, Anonymous decided that that was internet censorship and a lot of Cnet readers declare Anonymous to be “Hacker Heroes“.
Assuming the video isn’t taken down again, take a look. Also, check out Anonymous’ chilling response to the COS’s actions. Sounds like real life Fight Club talk.
Seems like people (or organizations, or churches) who don’t have anything to hide wouldn’t put up such a fight. I guess the truth can be embarrassing.
My first mildly interesting assignment for the NT Daily this semester was the “Sidewalks on Carroll Boulevard” story. The workers were really friendly and didn’t seem too bothered by me. I spoke horribly broken Spanish. I’m sure they laughed at me after I left.

I’m even enjoying the mundane assignments these days. It’s good to practice with a strobe or get used to being close with a wide angle and the like when there’s no pressure. Hopefully that way I’ll be familiar enough with the basics to work well when there is pressure.
