A Photo J Student

Experimenting

I’m doing photos for a Denton band called Grassfight. After doing photojournalism for a couple of years and sticking to telling the truth with photos, it’s been fun to have some flexibility with lighting and post production.

Kayo kindly posed for me when I scouted locations and this is the style I’m experimenting with. I’m thinking I might back off a little on the contrast for the final shots, but it really depends on what the band wants.

Anyone have any thoughts? (Apparently someone reads the blog, I just had my 1,000th view yesterday.) Grassfight wants a refined, almost noir look set in a city. I can’t help but feel that I’m over-editing, but that might just be my journalism roots talking.

My gf and I def saw you taking pics with a remote flash on a tripod at traditions hall. I stopped the car, and was checking out the set-up, but you def looked up, couldn’t tell who it was and was like, what the hell are they staring at. haha. overediting is def something to worry about, but don’t be afraid to do what you have to in post to achieve your goal. The daily is silly in that they didn’t want us to even burn and dodge, but I like your idea of sticking to the truth… and truth can always be dramaticized, with lighting or whatever. Being a journalist, you should know all about dramatizing the truth - jk.

I like the style that you are leaning towards with your pics. I think you have to do something like that when you are shooting a band. I know it sounds corny, but take them out to downtown Dallas in a run-down part of town and you could find plenty of good locations. I have also recently seen some cool stuff out in open fields with bands. Check out this band called Band of Heathens. They have some pretty interesting pictures on their website(Band of Heathens.com).

You girlfriend is beautiful! What a lovely model :)

I love the contrast and use of shadows. Different style than what I am use to seeing lately, but then again that would be because it’s more “Color!” “Family!” “Light!” And as you can see, it gets sort of crazy in the rush to make it warmer. But great job. I like this new taste of style. It looks great!
